Title:Cue the chorus: Canyon treefrog calling phenology on the falling limb of spring floods and warming nights
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:
Phenology is the timing of life events tied to environmental or abiotic cues. We used autonomous recording units (ARUs) across spring-summer months in 2022 to capture breeding calls from canyon treefrog (Hyla arenicolor). ARUs were placed in perennial and intermittent stream reaches across five Wilderness Areas within the upper Verde River basin in Arizona. We monitored streams by installing stream flow gauges (water level recorders). Treefrogs call at relatively low flow after spring floods. This suggests that stream-dwelling anurans may breed in response to flooding followed by prolonged periods of base flows which could be important for tadpole metamorphosis. Implications for stream regulation suggest maintaining the magnitude and timing of flood pulse events can benefit recruitment of stream-breeding amphibians.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:
We studied Canyon treefrogs within perennial and intermittent streams in the Verde River watershed. At seven locations (reaches), we co-located instruments to measure anuran call activity, stream flow, and air temperature. We deployed acoustic recording devices (Wildlife Acoustics, SM2 and SM4 loggers) in spring and summer to record 1 hour before and after sunrise and sunset and overnight at 5-min intervals. We co-located (within an average of 215 m) acoustic devices with water level recorders (Onset HOBO U20 fresh-water pressure transducers) attached to bedrock that recorded stream discharge at 15-min intervals for 12 months. Flow data were corrected for atmospheric pressure changes using site-specific barometric data. Air temperature was recorded using sensors (Onset HOBO U23 Pro v2) inside of solar radiation shields (Onset RS1) mounted to trees within the riparian forest at 15-min intervals.
